Weekend @ Cambodia. Historical Beauty.
Went on a 4D3N weekend trip to Cambodia. It was supposed to be just me and my mum. Dad super last minute decided to go, and hence the younger bro also came along. Yays. My bro is super sweet and nice. :)
My trusty fan and headband. The weather was FREAKING hell hot.
A trip out of the norms. I've got frens asking me.. "Why Cambodia?" I think its not really the kind of country that people would want to go for a holiday. But not when I've been to bkk twice already this year.. I think I wanted something more of a sightseeing trip than a shopping trip this time. And if I'm not wrong, Angkor Wat is one of the 7 wonders of the world.
I. Wanna. Conquer. The. 7. Wonders. Of. The. World.
On our first night there in Siem Reap, we walked around in their night market which is known as Pub Street. Lots of pretty accessories.
1st day of the local tours. Bayon Temple.
The epic smiling buddhas.
Me and bro. With smiling buddha behind us!
Their heads were stolen. So sad.
Me and mummy. Look at how we've aged. And lost so much to time.
2nd stop @ Ta Prohm. Honestly, I didn't know this was the place where they filmed Tomb Raider. :x
It's a place where gigantic roots exist, and overpower the architecture. Impressive. You'll feel small in here.
Angkor Wat. This is what I was there for.
The epic mirror image of the 5 structural towers. Thankful for the clear skies and non-rainy weather. The tour guide Mike mentioned that it was raining 3 days consecutively just prior to our arrival the day before! Phew!
Entrance to Angkor Wat.
@ the peak of Angkor Wat. Quite a pity that I wasn't allowed to go up to the highest tower of Angkor Wat to enjoy the scenery from above - Cos I was wearing a sleeveless top and it was forbidden. To them, its a disrespect to the gods.
The long longggg corridors. Makes me wonder if the people of the past had long slim legs.. They walk so much, and the place is so freaking HUGE!
You'll see walls and walls of depiction of the wars between the gods and demons. Elephants were their tools of transport to the wars. And monkeys were part of their warriors as well. I wonder if its really true.
I've heard about the beauty of watching the sunrise and sunset at Bakkeng Hill. Well of course, we didn't make it for the sunrise. Took us a good 20 minutes to the top. All 4 of us were perspiring profusely and it left my mum almost breathless. Didn't stay for the sunset though cos we were all too tired from the walking from the whole day and the hot weather as well.
Read about this S21 (Security 21) killing fields. Googled about this before going for this trip. It's really eerie I tell you. There's this tall building in the middle of the whole field that kept all the skulls in it for display. Everyone was quiet, solemn and walked around gingerly. It's depressing to know that you're walking on the grass that many people were killed on before. You still see blood stains, clothes patches lying around.
Well wishes from tourists from all over the world. RIP.
Visited the museum where it used to be the torture ground for the captives. It was freaking eerie that I did not walk finish the whole compounds.
It's disturbing to know that this whole thing took place in 1975 to early 1979. It's depressing to know why and how such cruelty actually took place. The way they took no mercy on human beings, and even babies and children. To them, keeping children "is of no gain to them. they might take revenge on you in the future". My goodness. And the worst part is to read and know that the way they kill the babies is by holding their legs and hitting them against a tree. And yes, the tree is still around in the killing fields. I couldn't bear to take a photo of that..
Anyway, trip's over and I'm back in Singapore. Shall continue on my thoughts during the journey from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh in my next entry.
Nights. :)
